Deathmatch!
The drums roll, the crowds scream...it's time for the ARENA!
Okay, here is my thought. Best 2 out of 3 matches (due to Magic-users starting at range having a pretty big advantage). One match starts with the combatants a full map away. One match starts at 50' away, and one match starts with the characters adjacent. After we do this a couple times, we can toss in things like corridor matches and the like. Also, standard races only the first time; later we can start tossing in Monster Manual or other level-adjusted critters.
Characters should be built with a standard 28-point buy (all stats start at 8; cost for attributes is 1 point up to 14, and 2 points after that. Use the 6 standard abilities only). Use recommended starting gold for PC's based on level, that chart is either in the PHB or DMG. I'll post the gold available when I put these up as well. You can use any current 3.0/3.5 edition sourcebook. Spells and spellcasters done by the book (no spellpoints).
I don't know what to do for prizes, but they always sweeten the pot. I'd be happy to give away a single +5 roll during the following gaming session or somesuch to whoever takes out my fighter, or something similar. Or everyone who wants to participate could all toss an uncommon mini into the pot, and the player who wins the most bouts gets them.
Anyway, this should produce some neat fights, as I don't have all of the books y'all have, but I think I may have one or two no one else (currently) does. Also, we need to decide whether we allow the leadership feat or not, and how it works (Cohort only or cohort and followers)
So, first bout:
9th level characters
36,000 gp (no more than half can be spent on a single item)
Work for everyone? Also, we should do this just prior to our gaming sessions, so everyone needs to start getting to my house earlier! (1:30-2:00pm)

Say T, i'm sorry that I'm going to miss these, that sounds really cool. Do you think I could create a character, define it's general tactics, and one of you could run it just for fun?
Also, I have a few NPC's and ideas laying around, T, so I'll try to get those into a semblance of order and send them your way. I know I personally much prefer a character class type enemy to say... skeletons?

This is good I like it! I was suggesting that an in-campaign arena would be fun, but i guess if I want one of those then I should just make one. I want to go ahead and state my plans to open an arena when we get back to freedom province. Contestants will be able to enter fights with NPC's or PC's (NPC's would be played by the DM unless another player is willing to do it, or in the event that on one wants to be the other player I will do it) There will also be a constant series of NPC battles taking place during business hours that PC's can bet on. You will be able to bet on any match. I need someone to help me with betting odds and to work out a way to randomize wins among npc's so that bets can be made on fights that are not actually played out. any suggestions are welcome.

You'll have to get out of the dungeon first! And then build an arena or ampitheatre. Then hire and pay some NPC's to fight. But as soon as that's all done, you're good to go! Riversang regularly does these as well, so if you want to recruit some of their pitfighters that might help start it up also.

If possible, Raistca would like to take great interest in the arena that (Whatever his name is now) is building, even playing an NPC type roll in the administration maybe or just regularly participating. I don't think that the idea of the arena should be such that people would want to be paid to do it. The pay should be when you bet on yourself and you win, in my opinion. And I think we should market the idea to the populace as a way to improve combat prowess to fight off evil, and basically make it not only the "cool" thing to do, but also the "right" thing to do, so we could get a large portion of the population to participate. It would only be to first blood or something, and have some fairly strict regulations to keep "accidents" to a minimum. (Maybe even blunted weapons)

Oh a couple of questions, T. First, I noticed that it seems like you're taking a more "by the book" approach to the rules, so i was wondering if we were going to do everything by the book. My particular question is about the Summon Monster spells, which in the book you get to pick which monster you summon, but we've always played it random. Just wondered what the ruling wouold be on that for possible characters. Also, in 28 point buy, is that with only the standard 6 ability scores? And finally are we rolling hp scores, or is it max or average?

Oh i just saw where you said it would be the six abilities, sorry!

HP would be average per dice. And yes, you could pick for your summons.
I also have been thinking, and Leadership would be a bad feat in this environment. One risks having it end up being more about the side combatants than the main one.
Also, you should consider being an Evil Overlord, I think I posted about it a couple weeks back. That way you could have an interesting impact on the game even though you're not here. If you want to, I will work up some factions for you to pick from.

Thanks for answering the questions, do you know when you guys will be doing the first arena? Also, I checked the archives for something about Evil Overlords, but couldn't find anything. Please elaborate, as you have grabbed my attention (Please note: Anything involving being referred to as "Lord" will grab Raistca's egocentric attention:)

I was hoping to do one this weekend.
Also, the evil overlord thing is the last post currently visible on the front page. (Named: Very cool...)

Hey one more question. Are death effects allowed?

Yo, T, I read the Very Cool... post and that looks... very cool. I'll definitely think about it. Was there any particular thing you wanted me to lord over?
